CONTINUING
PROFESSIONAL
DEVELOPMENT
The adjective "professional" describes an expertise based on theoretical knowledge. It means that a person has specific competences in one or more domains.
"development" describes an improvement and a process of becoming more advanced. Regarding CPD it means a growth of competences and qualities.
"continuing" means that something is consistently happening. Referring to CPD, it means that development is a process that will never be completed and thus never end.
How can teachers develop and become more professional?
This question was posed in the ProPIC intensive course in Kiel. The pictures show thus the ideas of Kiel students to the question, how professional development in the context of education can happen.
Every teacher needs to improve, not because they are not good enough, but because they can be even better
- Dylan Wiliam -
Continuing (professional) development means, that you never stop learning. Reaching targets always means to set new targets. To improve, even though you already improved. Even though you already learned a lot of things in your life, there are still more things that you can learn. The world is developing, and so shall we. For me personally, this means that I will never stop being curious and open to new things. Improving means changing and keeping up with new developments. Be the change!
One possibility for professional development is the observation of lessons of other teachers. Therefore it's useful to use an Observation Sheet. I prepared one, you can have a look at it HERE.
The following lines show an interview with another student taking part in the ProPIC project. The interview is about Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and shows its importance and personal experiences with it.
