Video Observation
by Swivl
During our Study Week at the University of Borås, we held a short 25-minute lesson on the Arabic language. Our students, the proPIC group made up of students form Barcelona, Newcastle, Karlsruhe and Kiel, acted as our guinea pigs. With the help of Richard Baldwin and Tobias Ruhtenberg, our lesson was recorded by a camera robot.
Referring to our recorded lesson we created a video paper in which we reflected on our agency during the lesson. We focused on the three elements "Digital Tools", "Co-Teaching" and "Task Management". We reflected on well-done moments and on things that could be improved and finally presented our results to the ProPIC group.
The production of the Video Paper was an interesting experience for all of us because no one of us had done this kind of reflection before. We noticed that the work on our recorded lesson helped us a lot to reflect on ourselves.
Nevertheless, the technical support we needed for the work taxed our patience a lot. We had big problems to find a laptop/computer, that combined a well-working video-editing software, Internet access and the possibility to get a sound to the video. It was minimum one hour that we passed by trying to find these preconditions we needed for the video paper production.
All in all I can say that I am happy that I had the possibility to learn about this reflection method. I think it is a good opportunity to reflect on a lesson while watching it and to look at oneself out of the student's position. I would recommend this method and use it again in the future.
